Charlie Wilson Obituary

Charlie Henry Wilson, 94, of Butler, GA, passed away peacefully and went to be with Lord on Tuesday, February 20, 2018.  Charlie was born on November 15, 1923 to the late Clyde and Grace Slaughter Wilson.  He attended Wesley Elementary School and graduated from Butler High School on May 28, 1940.  He farmed with his dad, Clyde Wilson, until 1945 when he joined the United States Army.  During World War II, he served as a Technician Fourth Grade, 762nd Engineer Light Equipment Company.  He was awarded the Cross of Military Service by the Wallace Edwards Chapter 430, United Daughters of the Confederacy on April 26, 2015 for his service during WWII.  He returned to Taylor County and farmed until April 15, 1948 at which time he began a 38 year career with Georgia Kraft Company in Macon, GA.  He retired on January 1, 1988. He married Olivia Elizabeth Gray on November 1, 1953.  Charlie, Elizabeth, twin daughters, Jane Gray and Nancy Elizabeth, remained in Macon until the family permanently returned to Taylor County on April, 24, 1974.  He became a member of the Ocmulgee Soil and Water Conservation District.  He was chosen as the 1977 Man of the Year.  He was a member of the American Legion, the Taylor County Cattleman’s Association and the Taylor County Farm Bureau where he served as director and vice-president.  He was an active member of Mable White Baptist Church, Macon, GA from 1954 until 1955 when be became a charter member of Westhighland Baptist Church where he served as a trustee, a Sunday School teacher, Sunday School superintendent and chairman of the Building Committee.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde S. and Lizzie Grace Wilson; his wife, Olivia Elizabeth Wilson; his grandson, Lt. Derek Charles Davis; his daughter, Jane Gray Davis; and three brothers, Robert, Cecil and Alfred Wilson.

He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Wilson Thompson; his granddaughter, Chesley Elizabeth Gleason (David) of Hilton Head, SC; his grandson, James Donald Davis, Jr. (Susan) of Macon, GA his son-in-law, Ret. Major General Don Davis of Byron, GA; his four sisters, Dorothy Kendrick and Martha Barrow of Butler, GA, Cathryn Anderson (Steve) of Thomaston, GA and Mary Ann Scott (Marshall) of Byron, GA; a host of nieces, nephews and dear friends also survive.  A special thanks to Thomaston Hospice, devoted caretakers and friends Teresa and Ernest Smith, Gwen Perry and Mark Edwards.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wesley Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Virginia Coffee, 632 Old Wire Road West, Butler, GA  31006, Thomason Hospice or organization of choice. 

Funeral services will be held 3:00 pm Thursday, February 22, 2018 at Horeb Baptist Church.  Visitation will be held from 1 until 2:30 at the church.  Burial will follow in Wesley United Methodist Church Cemetery.
