Funeral services for Johnny Lawhorn, 68, of Butler will be held on Friday, January 14, 2022, at 3:00 pm at Turner’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Johnny passed away on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, at Upson Regional Medical Center.
He was a member of Little Bethel Church. He worked with the Georgia Forestry Commission from 1973-1997. He began his 21-year career in 1997 with Taylor County Board of Commissioners in the Road Department, retiring as Bridge Superintendent. He helped build the Taylor County Recreation Department, worked with Taylor County Fire Department for several years as well as starting the high school girl’s softball program. He owned 4J’s Trucking and Lawhorn Dozier and Dump for many years. He began the Lawhorn Lawnmower Racing at the Ranow Four Trax. After retiring, he worked with his daughter Jana and her husband Mike at Montgomery Farms. He had many jobs on the farm, but his favorite was being in charge of their peanut crop from start to finish.
Johnny was known by many names, (daddy, poppa, friend, encourager, boss man, mentor, rock in hard times) to so many people. His legacy will live on through his family that he loved unconditionally.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Morris and Helen Eubanks Lawhorn; and two brothers, Ralph Lawhorn and Billy Lawhorn.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Lawhorn; two daughters, Jana Montgomery (Mike) of Reynolds and Joni New (Jimmy)of Byron; three brothers, Bobby Lawhorn (Sue) of Dexter, Randy Lawhorn (Terry) of Butler, and Frankie Lawhorn (Renee) of Reynolds; three sisters, Prissy Harris (Dwight) of Butler, Sue Lawhorn of Butler and Maxine Allen of Butler; six grandchildren, Paige Gassett (Tyler), Aden New, Luke Montgomery, Micah New, Avery New and Lane Montgomery; two great-grandchildren, Molly and Cooper Gassett; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 pm at the funeral home.
